LatAm Climate Culture Story Grant: Making COP30 journalism relevant.

Expand the COP30 narrative to make it relevant and understood by your readers and explore how it impacts everyday life. From climate intersection with sport, food, art and business to how it's shaping local communities - it's about building resonance. We invite you to pitch your ideas that rewrite the narrative so that credible, relevant, accessible and equitable COP30 reporting becomes part of people's daily life and normalises climate mitigation.

Eligibility

  • This grant is for journalists, news organisations and storytellers in Latin America.
  • Freelancers must be part of a news organisation.
  • Pitches must demonstrate cultural, intersectional reporting.
  • Pitches must be based on COP30 policy initiatives, conversations and outcomes.
  • Pitches must should show clear pathways to impact and/or audience engagement across Latin America.
  • You may submit pitches as a single journalist or newsroom, or in collaborative teams if desired.

Expected outcomes

  • Rich and vibrant stories in multimedia formats.
  • Stories which highlight regional challenges and solutions inspired by COP30.
  • Strengthened climate culture journalism in Latin America.
  • Measurable impact outcomes (e.g., policy engagement, community response, partnerships).
  • Increased audience awareness and engagement with climate narratives across Latin America.

Support provided

  • In addition to $2,000 financial support, each grant awardee will receive mentorship from cXc.
  • Our editorial and impact teams will guide you to effectively bring your story to life.

What is the purpose of this grant?

Ready to shake up climate journalism? The cXc Innovation Fund offers to fuel bold, game-changing news products and services that put audiences first and redefine the media landscape.

Who is eligible to apply?

This LatAm Climate Culture Story Grant is open to journalists, media outlets and storytellers in Latin America. Freelancers must be part of a news organisation.

Do I need to be a climateXchange member?

No, you don’t need to be a cXc member. However, if you aren't you will be screened for membership and this will be granted if your pitch is successful.

How much funding is available, and how will it be awarded?

The selected pitches will be awarded $2,000 USD. Grants will be paid by climateXchange in an up-front lump sum.

What can the grant funds be used for?

All story production costs, including field reporting, data visualisation, photo and video production, design, audience research and impact planning and implementation.

What are the reporting requirements?

We will ask for light-touch general and financial reporting at the end of the project – templates will be provided. We also want to see your commitment to demonstrating long term impact and we will ask for reporting beyond the end date of this project.

How do I apply?

Submit an online application detailing applicant information, the overall pitch idea, the impact and relevance of the story series, budget breakdown, and anything additional you would like us to know.

What are the assessment criteria?

Culture-first: The story pitch transforms COP30 climate themes from a siloed topic into a cultural force that is part of daily life. Read cXc’s Climate as Culture: A Journalist’s Guide.

Multimedia: The pitch must demonstrate that the stories generated will be in multimedia formats, and leverage social platforms.

Impact: The story moves the climate conversation forward in the local market. There is a direct contribution made to changing the Climate Journalism ecosystem.

Distribution: Pitches with diverse distribution tied to concrete impact goals will be prioritised.

Who owns the idea?

Applicants will fully own their ideas. cXc has no rights over the intellectual property. We ask the methodology and learning to be open source; however, all copyright and IP of the story and research is yours.

How does this grant support climate culture?

We recognize that climate change is not just a scientific or political issue, it’s a cultural one. We encourage projects that shape climate culture by making climate news more relatable, inspiring action, or connecting with communities through storytelling, art, or innovative engagement strategies.

When will grant winners be informed?

Successful awardees will be informed by 16 January 2026.
