Global Climate Journalism Insights and Prototypes, 8th Edition: Latin America

A report exploring contemporary challenges to effective climate coverage in Latin American media markets — and ideas for sustainable editorial products to surmount them.

Authors:

Elizabeth Sanders, cXc Impact Specialist; Simon Ingram cXc Editorial Director; Lucy O'Meara, climateXchange Programme Director

Latin America (LATAM) is already facing the harsh realities of climate change, and these realities are often compounded by social inequality. Across the region, these climate effects impact the delicate balance between people, nature and the environment.

At climateXchange (cXc), we believe that climate is culture. This belief drives our mission to empower news organisations with the tools and strategies to tell stories that resonate deeply with their users and inspire meaningful action. 2026 marks the first knowledgeXchange (kXc) session in the LATAM region. Held in Rio de Janeiro in May, we brought together journalists, editors, and creators from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay to reflect on the challenges that continue to shape climate journalism in the region and collaborate on financially sustainable product solutions that could change the climate media ecosystem.

This report distills the key findings from the 2026 kXc workshop into four core challenges, each presented with practical solutions, and actionable insights for news organisations. It aims to inspire meaningful change through shared ownership, collective action, and a commitment to building a culture of impactful and financially sustainable climate-conscious narratives — outlines for which are also shared here.
