How to engage one of the most media-saturated landscapes in the world with fresh information on climate that inspires action?

This is the crossroads that European journalists find themselves at—with prevailing winds of war, economic uncertainty and food security sweeping across the continent, and with them sweeping climate from the front-page desks of many outlets.

Funding apathy, audience fatigue, political complication and—above all—the need for innovative types of climate change coverage were just some of the challenges articulated during the European knowledgeXchange held in Brussels in February 2024. Encompassing voices and views from across this complex and politically diverse continent, journalists and newsroom leaders came together to discuss the specific obstacles in achieving the desired engagement on climate.

The result is this report, which breaks down eight principal challenges faced by European newsrooms when it comes to covering climate—which, as seen elsewhere, are in some instances shared with other regions, and in others deeply specific.
